Diamond GuideHighly prized and valued, diamonds are unique and can make all the difference in an engagement ring. Find out what sets them apart and influences their market value: the so-called 4 "C's". |
CARAT WEIGHTWhen comparing engagement rings of different models, it's natural to use the weight of the diamonds as a reference. But it is important to realise that there can be differences between rings with the same number of diamonds. The reasoning is simple: two 0.5 carat (ct) stones are worth much less than one 1 carat stone. This is because rarity increases according to the size of the diamond. What's more, it is not possible to turn two 0.5 carat diamonds into a 1 carat diamond. Therefore, the price increases according to the size. |
TRANSPARENCY: "CLARITY GRADE"Diamonds can contain small inclusions, which affect their degree of transparency, reflection of light and therefore the market value attributed to them. Diamonds with a higher degree of transparency are the most interesting and valued. |
COLOUR GRADEIn nature, diamonds have a slightly yellowish colour. They can take on other colours, but in jewellery, colourless diamonds are the most popular. H diamonds are in the "almost colourless" range and some colour can only be detected when compared to other colourless diamonds. |
"CUT"The cut of a diamond refers to the quality of its cut, which considers factors such as proportions, symmetry, and polish. Cut grading should not be confused with the shape of the diamond. The cut only identifies the quality of the cut, regardless of the shape, which can be brilliant, navette, drop, oval, princess, among others. |
